About J Boats
The story of J/Boats is a classic entrepreneurial tale: With a $20,000 investment, and a speedy 24-foot sailboat that Rod Johnstone built in his garage, Rod & his brother Bob Johnstone went into business. That was 1977. Now, that boat (the J/24), has become the most popular recreational offshore keelboat in the world. The Johnstone family has made an undeniable mark on the sailing world. In addition to the 5,500 J/24s cruising the waves, there are over 9,500 more J/Boats, ranging from the International J/22 to the J/65, that sailing enthusiasts have bought at prices ranging from $10,000 to $2,000,000.
While other brands may sell more boats, the Johnstones have won the performance-oriented segment of the market. Theirs is the so-called racer/cruiser category: boats that perform well on the race course but which are comfortable and easy enough for the family to daysail and cruise. It is with knowledgeable, experienced sailors that the Johnstones have done best.
The story begins in 1975. Rod, then an ad salesman for the sailing trade magazine, Soundings, and an active one-design sailor decided to build a sailboat he had been designing since completing a Westlawn School of Yacht Design correspondence course in the 60's. With $400-worth of fiberglass and wood, some rigging and hardware left over from a Soling of Bob's, he built the 24' x 9' wide RAGTIME on weekends in his 3 car garage at his home in Stonington, Connecticut. During the summer of 1976, with an all family crew aboard, RAGTIME beat everything in sight. Rod realized he had created something special.
Enter Everett Pearson, the owner of Tillotson Pearson, Inc, a highly respected boat builder in Warren Rhode Island. He was quite taken with Rod's design and agreed to produce the boat on spec in return for the U.S. building rights. Display ads in Soundings got the word out. That winter they set up a makeshift factory in an old textile mill in nearby Fall River, Massachusetts, and began popping out J/24s.
Enter the marketing experience of brother Bob, a vice president of marketing at AMF/Alcort (the makers of Sunfish sailboats at the time). He saw the potential in the boat Rod had designed. From 1975 to 1977, Bob had helped to take Alcort from the red into the black, and then began trying to convince AMF to start producing a boat similar to the J/24. When AMF didn't jump, in February of 1977, at age 43, Bob did and threw in his lot with J/Boats.
With Rod contributing the design and his prototype 'Ragtime' and Bob investing $20,000 to cover start-up costs, office space, and advertising, their 50-50 partnership was launched. They sold 250+ (and delivered 136) J/24s that first year. Each successive year has marked unique achievements in the sport and industry.
The second generation of Johnstones has been at the helm since 1988, while founders Rod and Bob continue to contribute their talents. Since 1992, Jeff (president) & Alan (vice president & designer) have managed company operations from J/Boats headquarters in Newport, RI and a total of seven Gen 2 & 3 Johnstones (Stu, Drake, Jeff, Phil, Alan, Pam and Nick) serve on the current Board of Directors.

About RS Sailing
RS ORIGINS AND FAMILY
The idea behind RS was born when a small group of sailors sat on a Cornish sea-wall and discussed the opportunity to move the game forward. It was driven forward by our passion use the latest in design and technology to make higher performance more viable for most of us – to inspire more sailors.
We just hoped that if we developed boats that we’d love to sail, then people like us would love them too. And that if we built exciting events and made a load of RS sailing friends then the other RS sailors would make new friends too.
We honestly didn’t foresee what would happen.
Looking around it brought it home how lucky we are to have you guys. You have created something unique and very special, well done and I hope long may it continue!
Howard FarbrotherThings grew fast and an amazing RS community was born. It was as much fun off the water as it was on it. Single-handed sailors met boyfriends and girlfriends – moved between RS single and double handers – got married – had children – bought an RS for their children – and now their parents are having a great time with old RS mates at RS youth events.
We love the story of a euphorically emotional RS400 sailor literally phoning from the maternity suite to say “Guess what, guess what – we’ve just had a baby!! I want to order a 700 because we won’t be able to sail the 400 together for a while!” I have a feeling we got the news before the grandparents.
That’s it really. RS is still run by sailors, for sailors. The family is more widespread and we don’t remember every customer’s sail number. But we still have that obsession to make sailing more exciting and more popular and to give great service to everyone who trusted us enough to buy one of our boats.
THE RS TEAM
Our core team has been together since the early days. We may spend a lot of time talking about boats, events, gossip and ideas – but it reflects who we are and what made RS special.
The RS Sailing family has grown significantly over the last decade through our dealer network around the world. Most RS dealers share our similar commitment to the sport – that’s probably how they became involved.
We’d love to be able to talk boats with you all, but you may speak another language or be on the other side of the planet – you’ll be in good hands with our dealers.
THE RS DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
When we launched RS we had little money and knew our boats had to be good enough to speak for themselves. Our fundamental development process hasn’t changed since the first RS boats. The detail behind it, however, is almost unrecognisable.
It all begins with our close involvement in sailing, seeing an opportunity for evolution and creating the design brief to fulfil that opportunity. We assemble a development team that includes a designer, hull manufacturer, sail and spar manufacturers – all selected for their world-class experience within the relevant sector – always led by our own expert RS team.
Gone are the days of cottage industry. Significant investment has enabled RS to stay at the top of our game. State of the art Computer Aided Design (CAD) technology allows rapid protoyping, extensive 3D printed components and the ability to manage complex projects in-house. Our widespread experience leads to innovative solutions that challenge the norms, improve function and manufacturing efficiency – in areas as diverse as entry-level user friendliness and ultra-light high performance structures.
By out-sourcing production we are not limited by our own resources. We can select the best materials, manufacturing systems and leading suppliers relevant to each different model and market sector.
Design development is followed by prototyping, testing, input from key customers and refinement. Once the specification has been signed-off, the manufacture of production tooling begins. First built boats are tested, checked and quality control procedures are implemented before production manufacture finally begins.
RS sailboats have won multiple design awards internationally. Our own RS team has unmatched expertise and devotion. Their success wouldn’t have been possible without irreplaceable input from some the sailing industry’s most enthusiastic brains. Feedback from great sailors has contributed significantly. We really do appreciate it all.
RS CLASS ASSOCIATIONS & EVENTS
Underpinning the RS range are the infamous RS events. They’re organized by independent Class Associations and have characterized RS from the outset. The ethos is for fantastic racing on the water matched by a seriously good time ashore. We still talk about some huge events and legendary parties and, only slightly worryingly, every year there will be more.
Champions and inexperienced sailors rub shoulders socially, share tips and encouragement. The same atmosphere is there in youth and adult RS fleets. Stars of the future have grown up in RS classes – hardened Olympic level competitors enter for an injection of racing enjoyment.
We can’t say exactly how the RS atmosphere was created, but it holds a strong place in RS history and continues to be one of the reasons RS Sailing is loved by so many.
Each race-boat has a Class Association organising racing and training, maintaining the Rules and a website with info, news and forums

About Zodiac
Luxury and unsinkable RIB boats
125 YEARS OF AIR AND WATER
Zodiac Nautic has its origins in the ‘Société française de ballons dirigeables et d’aviation Zodiac’, a specialist in the production of airships. One of its engineers, Pierre Debroutelle, invented the first inflatable boat prototypes in the 1930s for the Aéronavale (French Naval Air Force), which was looking for easy and innovative solutions for military transport.
This move from the air to the sea would make Zodiac world famous. In the 1960s, the company moved into the leisure industry in response to the boating craze among holidaymakers. With its unrivalled experience, Zodiac Nautic, the pioneer of major innovations in the field of inflatable boats, is today at the forefront in terms of products and services, fully in tune with the times.
"Mastering air and water through a resolutely innovative approach has been Zodiac's vocation since its creation in 1896."
Know-how
125 years of experience and inventor of the inflatable boat, Zodiac Nautic offers products with exceptional durability and reliability thanks to materials and manufacturing processes that are always at the cutting edge of technology.
THE HULL
Its rot-proof polyester internal structure, made up of a grid of longerons and stringers, ensures a one-piece connection between the hull and the deck. This method provides an overall rigidity that is conducive to performance and resistant to all impacts experienced while sailing, under all load conditions.
THE TUBE
Zodiac Nautic has developed a unique industrial process for assembling its tubes: thermo-banding. This process consists of welding the pieces of Strongan fabric together to provide a perfect seal and a durable, almost indestructible quality of assembly, which is superior to the fabric’s own strength. Zodiac Nautic is the only manufacturer to have mastered the welding of all the structural elements of an inflatable boat, guaranteeing exceptional longevity and safety.
REMOVABLE TUBE: A CONCEPT BY ZODIAC
Available on most of our models, the tube is equipped with a bolt rope that slots into a groove in the hull. Sealing is ensured by pressurising the tube. Fully removable, the tube can be dismantled and folded for easy maintenance, repair, transport and storage.
CHANGING THE TUBE?
Nothing could be simpler; the tubes can be replaced independently of the hulls, ideal for renovating or giving your boat a new look at low cost.
QUALITY TEST
Zodiac Nautic carefully selects the materials that are used to build its boats according to a strict set of specifications that guarantee an exceptional standard of quality. Zodiac Nautic is probably the only manufacturer to put its new boats through a rigorous series of sailing tests in extreme conditions. Rest assured, your Zodiac boat will accompany you everywhere and for a long time.
The RIB concept
TRUE 4×4 OF THE SEAS
True ocean adventurers, they are extremely popular with professionals and boaters who appreciate their exceptional marine qualities and practicality at all times.
MORE SEAWORTHY
The unique combination of a very low centre of gravity, a deep V hull and a stabilising/shock-absorbing tube gives the RIBs speed and crossing capabilities in rough seas with unprecedented comfort and safety. To try it is to discover a new level of performance. Anglers and experienced pilots are not mistaken; its devoted users could not do without it.
MORE CAPACITY
You’ve counted correctly! There are 12 footballers on board this Zodiac boat, and there could have been more – or heavier ones! The Zodiac boat has an exceptional weight/surface area ratio, providing such buoyancy that it can carry considerable loads: ideal for day trips with large numbers of friends or family and in complete safety! The buoyancy distributed around the periphery, combined with a very low centre of gravity, ensures a level of stability that makes Zodiac boats almost impossible to capsize when loaded! The tubes of a Zodiac boat have several compartments separated by watertight partitions. Thanks to its large air supply, the boat retains its buoyancy and remains conceptually unsinkable when fully loaded, even with a deflated compartment.
MORE PRACTICAL
It’s so easy to put it in the water or pull it onto the beach! The low weight of Zodiac boats allows a passenger vehicle to be launched easily. Without a berth, RIBs are as economical as they are practical. The tubes are permanent fenders and naturally act as shock absorbers. When manoeuvring in the harbour, if it comes into contact with the boat alongside or the quay at low speed, it will bounce off the obstruction without causing any damage.
