This 1974 Sabre 28 "Katura" was the first design for the newly-formed company. Its design goal was to build the finest 28-foot sailing yacht available, using the state of the art materials and techniques available at the time and construct the boat on a modern assembly line basis, to realize good economy and production quality. The Sabre 28 is a small recreational keelboat built predominantly of fiberglass, with extensive teak wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig, a raked stem, vertical transom, skeg-mounted rudder controlled by a ship's wheel and a swept fixed fin keel.

The accommodations include a double "V" berth in the forward cabin, single and double bunks in the main cabin and a quarter berth. The forward cabin has a door for privacy. The head includes a hanging locker and a dorade vent. The main cabin has a folding table that stows against a bulkhead. The galley features a recessed stove.

The cockpit is over 7' in length. Other features include a foredeck hatch, four opening and four fixed ports, internal halyards for both the mainsail and genoa, raised by a mast-mounted winch. The mainsheet traveler is mounted on the transom keeping it out of the way and easy to reach from the helm and genoa tracks are provided. The genoa is controlled with dual two-speed winches, mounted on the cockpit coaming.

Accomodations and Layout

The V-berth is forward and sleeps two. There is a filler cushion for more shoulder room. The forward hatch above provides ventilation. There are also teak storage shelves outboard on each side of bunk. The head is located on port side aft of V-berth with two teak prvacy doors. The stainless steel sink and vanity are opposite on the starboard side. The main salon has a teak cabin sole, full size berths to port and starboard, port aft quarterbeth, bulkhead mounted salon table with book shelves behind and an L-shaped galley area. This interior has been cared for over the years, newer foam cushions, curtains, and light shades complement the wood interior. The interior is open and airy. During this production boat era the Sabre 28 interior shines among her competitors.

The galley is located to starboard and features the following: ice box, stainless steel sink, 2 burner stove (not currently working), dedicated trash storage, and manual fresh water. There is also lots of outboard storage and under counter drawer storage. Located at the aft end of the starboard settee is also a flip-up counter extension.
